President-elect Donald Trump announced late this week that he has selected Dr. Janette Nesheiwat to serve as the next U.S. Surgeon General in his upcoming administration.

“Dr. Nesheiwat is a double board-certified Medical Doctor with an unwavering commitment to saving and treating thousands of American lives,” Trump said in a statement.

Trump said that Nesheiwat “is a fierce advocate and strong communicator for preventive medicine and public health” who “is committed to ensuring that Americans have access to affordable, quality healthcare, and believes in empowering individuals to take charge of their health to live longer, healthier lives.”

The 44-year-old was raised by a widowed immigrant mother who worked as a nurse, the Trump transition team said.

Born in New York, she graduated from South Florida in 2000 with a Biology degree. After completing U.S. Army Reserve Officer Training Corps, she pursued medical school in the Caribbean before completing her residency at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

“Her expertise and leadership have been pivotal during some of the most challenging Healthcare crises of our time,” Trump said. “Dr. Janette provided on-the-ground medical treatment to Americans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the Joplin tornadoes. She is also a member of Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Assistance, Relief Team, and has provided lifesaving care during crises in Morocco, Haiti, and Poland.”
